Pinstriping another Skateboard... A re-upload but in Real Time (ish)
This is a much requested real time edit of me pinstriping a skateboard.
I've still removed about 5 minutes of brush loading and faffing about.
I'm using an Xcalibre 0000 brush and 1Shot paint/reducer (not sponsored).
Feel free to ask questions.
Have fun.

First of all I'd like to say thank you for sticking around, I know it's been too long without uploading anything, I'll try to do better. Then I'd like to apologize for this video being a bit rubbish, really dark and hard to see what's going on but this is how I practice and get design ideas sometimes, just putting lines down and not worrying too much about symmetry or where it's going, just see...

I airbrush an elaborate skull and knife, then pinstriped both sides and brush scripted "Live to Skate and Skate to Die". Mate, whenever I’ve painted a skateboard I try to not think about it getting used. I do paint a few banger race cars over here, they get totally destroyed in one meeting and then scraped, it does allow me to just splash the paint on and try different things out, I find it quite therapeutic to paint something nice but temporary. As always, thank you for watching and commenting, it really does mean a lot to me that people still watch these old videos, I might have to make some more when the show season finishes 👍

    There is an easy way ... LOL ... I'm retired and still pinstripe clocks and saws as I'm rated 100% Disabled (2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne, Vietnam) after 9 years US Army I got an offer to teach Airbrush Techniques in Australia, in 1979, been here ever since. I often got asked how long it took me to learn to pinstripe as I did a lot of Truck yard work ... like airbrush work, it's mostly "muscle memory" ... a point in time when you no longer need to think about it. You instead look at the negative space, the balance of the shapes, and go with your visions. Nice post... love your work.

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers Рік тому

      Hello, sorry about the voice but it is what it is and I’m not changing it now. Reducers, I mostly use chromaflo for pinstriping but sometimes use the low temp reducer when it’s really cold. You can use mineral spirits but I find that makes the paint sort of slippery. If you need to clear over your work, add hardener to the paint and use high temp reducer but be aware the paint will dry very quickly even in the brush. I hope this helps, thank you for watching. If you’ve any other questions let me know. Have fun 👍

      @@PaintySniffers hardener to the paint? I thought just clearing over the pinstripe would seal the deal. Im working on my motorcycle tank and added gold leaf after wetsanding the clearcoat again. I plan on clearing it after pinstriping the goldleaf edges

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers Рік тому

      Clearing over 1shot can be tricky, it’s an enamel (oil based paint) and can wrinkle up under the clear coat. Anything that I need clearing over I use a little hardener in it and leave to fully cure for a week (or longer if I can), then a few “dust coats” of clear and leaving to dry before hitting it with a wet coat. It’s solvents in the clear that does it.

    How long does it take to fully dry?

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers Рік тому

      Depends on temperature and humidity but normally touch dry in about an hour and fully cured in a few days to a week. If you’re painting on leather it can take forever to dry. There are different reducers and additives that can speed up or slow down drying as well. I know right, loads of stuff and no definite answer to your question, really sorry about that. I use a sign making material called “Alupanel” or “Diabond”, it’s two thin sheets of aluminium with a plastic core, very stiff and lightweight, easy to cut and comes in a variety of colours and finishes. Glass isn’t an easy surface to learn on, yes you can trace designs but it’s a slippery surface to paint and keep control of your brush (I’m sure someone is going to disagree with me here). Practice on loads of different surfaces, people are going to bring some daft things for you to paint, there’s always someone that wants a leather jacket or a textured dashboard pinstriped 🙄. The background music is more of a distraction, than an enhancement. The vocoder voice is also irritating and difficult to understand. Some valid points but not much help for me, as a novice.

      Also, what about pinstriping is it you need more instruction about, is there one particular thing you’re struggling with? If you would like something explained or demonstrated all you have to do is ask.

      Really enjoy youre videos what brush are you using

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers 6 місяців тому

      @sll-tt6bj in this video it’s probably an xcaliber brush in a size OOO or OOOO, I use them a lot for design stuff. There’s a chance it could be a Mack series 10 in a size OOO as I use them a lot as well. Either of these brushes a great for this kind of design work. People seem to think the brush is the most important thing but paint consistency, palleting and practice are the most important things. Have fun, thanks for watching and never ever give up 👍

    Would nitrocellulose paint works for pinstriping?

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers 2 роки тому

      Hello, I’ve never tried it so couldn’t really say a definite yes or no. I wouldn’t even know if it would damage the brushes. Enamel paint is the most common paint used in pinstriping, urethane paint is sometimes used and I’ve heard some people are now using acrylic paints. You would have to research which brushes are compatible with other paints. Let me know if you try it and tell me how it goes. Good luck and have fun 👍

      @@PaintySniffers I'll try to mess with it later but would it be better to use cheap synthetic enamel? Or do you have any experience with it?

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers 2 роки тому

      Cheap enamel is ok to practice and learn with, I wouldn’t use it on anything I was going to sell or a customers vehicle.

    Is the glove so you don't leave finger grease on your surface?

    • @PaintySniffers
      @PaintySniffers 2 роки тому

      It’s more so that my fingers slide on the panel without sticking or squeaking. I don’t always wear one, it just depends on how sticky my fingers are on the day. Thank you for watching and commenting 👍
